"This photograph is part of the unpublished series “Masks” (1992-1993) that Flavia Gandolfo created shortly after moving to Austin in mid-1992. This series marked the beginning of her photographic experimentation through the manipulation of images in the laboratory. “Masks” is a record of a Halloween celebration at a retirement home for the elderly, as well as other locations in the United States. The attention to masked bodies underscores her desire to avoid documenting identities and instead focus on performance and the fictions that people construct about themselves."
