Of Indigenous origin, Chambi dedicated much of his life to photographing the Peruvian Andes, reclaiming the pre-Hispanic past through images of Inca ruins and portraying life in Andean communities at the beginning of the 20th century. In this way, Chambi incorporated a new perspective into the local photography of the period, proposing a unifying view of Peru and also shedding light on indigenist discourses that were beginning to gain traction in this territory. Eleven years after Hiram Bingham photographed the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu for an exclusive report in National Geographic magazine, Martín Chambi photographed it with his own lens. From this experience, his work entered a new phase, where his handling of light, form, space, and texture were further defined by unique angles and a personal aesthetic that made him an emblem of contemporary and documentary photography in Peru and Latin America.

This publication presents a selection of approximately 130 period photographs by Martín Chambi from the Jan Mulder Collection, available in various formats: classic views, panoramic views, toned images, and postcards. These images depict landscapes, portraits and self-portraits, festivals and customs, archaeological ruins, monuments, and cities, among others. Renowned photography professionals such as Horacio Fernández, Andrés Garay, François Laso, and Jan Mulder write in this book from different perspectives about the life and work of Martín Chambi. This publication, designed by the Berenguer Brothers in Barcelona, presents these four strategically placed texts, which mark the rhythm of the book's different stages.
